Make a pillow / cushion cover

We at HomeUno love pillows. They add color, pattern and texture to a room. They too soften hard edges of furniture and create a much warmer space.

If you have trouble deciding on making permanent changes towards your living room, decorating using pillows is an appropriate move! This is due to the inexpensiveness of pillows. You can always put them away immediately, if you do not like them anymore.

Pillow cover are a quick and easy sewing project. Look for fabrics that will enhance the decor of your room, by providing color, pattern and texture. For a different look, you can try using a batik (patterned dyed cloth). You'll be amazed at how adding few throw pillows can brighten up your living room.

Materials needed:
fabric (example: cotton fabric by Waverly or Covington)
pillow form
matching thread
sewing scissors (recommended: Gingher scissors)
straight pins
sewing machine (optional)

Steps:

1. Preshrink the fabric. Many fabrics can be preshrunk using the washing machine and dryer. Make sure you follow the washing insctruction of the fabric you have chosen.

2. To make the front side of the pillow cover, cut one piece of the fabric according to the size of the pillow form + seam allowance of 1/2 inch. This is to ensure that the fabric fits the pillow snugly. If your pillow form is very firm, add a 1 inch seam allowance.

3. To make the back of the pillow cover, cut a piece of fabric the same width as the front piece just now, but with a length that is 4 inches longer that the length of the pillow front piece.

4. Fold the cut piece half lengthwise, and cut along the fold. Now, you have two pieces of fabric for the back cover. Take one of them, and fold one of the edges which measures the same as the front cover width, 1/4 inch and press. Fold 1/4 inch again, press and stitch. Repeat with the second piece of the back cover.

5. With right sides together, lay one of the two back cover on the front cover. The stitched edge of the back cover should be in the middle of the front cover. Pin in place. Do the same thing using the second back cover. The two pillow backs will overlap each other at the stitched edges by 1 1/2 inches. Stitch the back and front cover together. Trim the excess fabric from the corners.

6. Turn the pillow cover right side out, and insert the pillow form. Add a button or ribbon on the opening (where you insert your pillow form) if necessary.

After discovering how easy it is to make pillow, now you can make as many as you please. Reward yourself with a long nap on your favourite pillow covered with your newly made pillow cover!
